To know Helen is to know that she loves the ocean, her family, reading, writing, friendship and music.

Her two children, Emily and Jordan are both students at Auburn University, where her husband, Dr. Marc Silverstein, holds an endowed chair in literature.  Her husband has published extensively in the field of literary theory and contemporary drama.

Helen writes flash fiction, short stories, novels and poetry.  Her inspiration comes from listening keenly to the heart and spirit of people she meets in "real" life and people she meets as characters in her stories.

"The essential in writing
as in living
is not to seem
somebody
but to be one's true self."  -F. Lucas
News:  Helen's flash fiction "Dennis and Me" will be published in an upcoming issue of  The Journal of Microliterature.

Helen was awarded her first writer's residency several years ago, where she met her dear friend, Alison Smith, author of the memoir Name All the Animals.  With Alison's encouragement, Helen took the leap into studying creative writing at the graduate level.  Many thanks to Alison (an awesome friend and writer).

Helen is also in the process submitting a number of  new short stories for publication.
